General Orders
Head Quarters New Windsor Friday May 18th 1781.

The Commander in Chief having occasion to be absent from the Army for a few days Major General St Clair will command untill his return, or ’till an officer superior to himself shall arrive.1

1. GW left headquarters on this date to meet Lieutenant General Rochambeau (see The Wethersfield Conference and Aftermath, 14 May–16 June, editorial note). GW returned to New Windsor toward evening on 25 May and presumably resumed command at that time (see the entry for that date in , 3:371).
GW wrote Brig. Gen. John Paterson from New Windsor on this date: “A sudden occasion obliges me to set out this Morning for Weathersfield—I have directed, as you will see by the Orders of this day, Major General St Clair, to take the general command during my absence, or ’till the arrival of a superior Officer at the Army—Your reports consequently will be made to him—if during my absence it should so happen, that his Junior & Your Senior Officer should arrive at the Posts below (now under your direction), you will deliver this letter over for his government” (Df, in David Humphreys’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW).
