Monticello. Mar. 29. 24.
Th Jefferson to Dr Cooper
I recieved, a day or two ago, a small pamphlet on Materialism without any indication from what quarter it came. but I knew there was but one person in the United States capable of writing it and therefore am at no loss to whom to address my thanks for it and assurances of high esteem and respect.
RC (photocopy in ScU: Cooper Papers); dateline at foot of text; addressed: “Doctr Thomas Cooper Columbia S.C.”; franked; postmarked; endorsed by Cooper: “March 29. 1824 on my pamphlet on Materialism.” FC (MHi); on verso of a reused address cover from Richard Rush to TJ; in TJ’s hand; partially dated, but fully dated in TJ’s endorsement.
