Dear Sir,
I herewith return you Mr Dawsons sketch Balance Sheet of the Books of the University of Virginia up to the 1st of October corrected, the error was not in the books as was supposed by Mr Dawson, but in the Balance sheet taken by mr Watson, to whom I pointed out the error on wednesday last. the books are balanced up to the 1st Oct: within one quarter of a cent. most respectfuly

The supposed accounting error identified by Martin Dawson and John Watson was for $1,000.01¼ (see note to Dawson’s Report on University of Virginia Accounts, 4 Oct. 1823). p.: “Proctor.”
The anonymous letter attacking Brockenbrough, which he laid before the University of Virginia Board of Visitors on 7 Apr. 1823, is not found, but see TJ to Joseph C. Cabell, 4 Feb. 1823, and note.
