James Madison to Thomas Jefferson, 20 April 1818
From James Madison
Montpellier Apl 20. 1818
Dear Sir
I take the opportunity by Judge Holmes of sending my first Instalment for the Central College, which I beg the favor of you to have put into the proper hands.
The only subscription to the lists I distributed is the inclosed one from Gen A. T. Mason. Is it worth while to avail ourselves of his solitary liberality in that distant quarter, which connects him so little with an institution as yet a local one? I do not find that any decision of Cooper has taken place with respect to his translation from Philada
James Madison
RC (Anonymous, courtesy of Profiles in History, Beverly Hills, Calif., 2006); endorsed (trimmed) by TJ. Recorded in SJL as received 11 May 1818. RC (DLC); address cover only; with PoC of TJ to Allen Bernard, 30 July [1818], on verso; addressed: “Mr Jefferson Monticello” by “Judge Holmes.” Enclosure not found.
For the contributions of Madison and of Armistead T. Mason, from the distant quarter of Loudoun County, see the Master List of Subscribers to Central College, [after 7 May 1817], document 5 in a group of documents on The Founding of the University of Virginia: Central College, 1816–1819, 5 May 1817.
A letter from Mason to TJ of 15 Sept. 1817, not found, is recorded in SJL as received 24 Sept. 1817 from Selma, his Loudoun County estate. SJL also records TJ’s missing reply to Mason of 30 Sept. 1817. Both entries mistakenly give Mason’s middle initial as “S.”
