Thomas Jefferson Papers

Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, 11 April 1818

To James Madison

Monticello Apr. 11. 18.

Dear Sir

Yours of Mar. 29. came duly to hand, but I put off answering it because I expected to have written sooner by the bearer of the present mr Coffee. nothing presses as to the payment of the instalment which is the subject of your letter. it may either be paid to the Richmd bank of Virginia, or sent to mr Garret or mr Barksdale by any body happening to be coming, or brought when you come to our meeting of May 11th. I am in hopes you will then find Correa & Cooper here. then also we will confer on our campaign of Rockfish gap. the most urging thing at present is to get a return of the subscription papers of your quarter. not a single one has been recieved from the North Eastern quarter.

Mr Coffee the bearer of this is a Sculptor lately from England, and really able in his art. he makes busts in plaister or terra cotta, he came from Richmond to take your bust and mine, and gives less trouble than any artist, painter or Sculptor I have ever submitted myself to. I join him therefore in solliciting your indulging him and your friends in setting for him. I set out for Bedford tomorrow to return the 1st week of May. ever & affectionately yours.

Th: Jefferson

RC (DLC: Madison Papers); at foot of text: “Mr Madison.” PoC (DLC); on verso of reused address cover of Randolph Harrison to TJ, 17 Feb. 1818; endorsed by TJ.

Alexander Garrett wrote that during a 23 Mar. 1818 conversation, TJ indicated that subscribers should deposit donations for Central College in Richmond’s bank of virginia: “I yesterday confered with Mr Jefferson upon the propriety of publishing a notice in the Enqui[r]er authoriseing a deposit in the Virginia bank by those of the subscribers to whom it might be most convenient, he approves of it and prefers the Virginia bank because it has manifested a greater disposition to accomodate the institution than either of the other banks” in the state capital (Garrett to John H. Cocke, 24 Mar. 1818 [RC in ViU: JHC]; one word editorially corrected; addressed: “Genl John H Cocke Fluvanna” by “Mr. Neilson”; endorsed by Cocke).

For the upcoming meeting of the “board of commissioners for the University” at rockfish gap, see TJ to José Corrêa da Serra, 10 Apr. 1818, and note.

A missing letter from TJ to James Leitch of 12 Apr. 1818 is recorded in SJL with the following notation: “to pay 105.D. to Coffee.” TJ subsequently observed in his financial records that “This is to pay for the originals of 3. busts, to wit Mrs. Randolph’s Ellen’s & mine. I bespoke of him 12. copies of Mrs. R’s @ 5.D. each and one of Mr. Madison’s if he makes it” (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, 2 vols., The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1343).
