Dear Sir
The enclosed may gave you some amusment. I have read neither, and cannot therefore speak of their merits. one is attributed to armstrong & the other to winder.
The book which you were so kind as to send me respecting Louisiana will be taken advantage of, in the contemplated discussion with the Spanish govt. It shall be restord afterwards.
your letter to Miss Bruff was sent to her as soon as receiv’d.
Congress will adjourn on tuesday, after which I shall be at liberty, and intend visiting albemarle, when I shall have the pleasure of seeing1 you, I hope in good health.

The enclosed pamphlets vindicated the conduct of Secretary of War John Armstrong and General William H. Winder, respectively, during the War of 1812. The work by “Spectator,” which was attributed to armstrong, was An Enquiry respecting the Capture of Washington by the British, on the 24th August, 1814; with an Examination of the Report of the Committee of Investigation Appointed by Congress (Washington, 1816; , 5 [no. 163]). The response on behalf of winder, thought to have been authored by Rider H. Winder, was Remarks on a Pamphlet, entitled “An Enquiry respecting the Capture of Washington by the British, on the 24th of August, 1814, with, &c. &c. by Spectator” (Baltimore, 1816; , 5 [no. 163]).
