From John Jay to Sarah Livingston Jay, 16 April 1794
To Sarah Livingston Jay
Wednesday— Ph[iladelphi]a. 16 ap. 1794
My dear Sally
I wrote to you a few Lines last Night1— they were written in Haste— This Day the nomination alluded to in that Letter was made— the Decision will be made Tomorrow. I will then write to you again
The Letters by the Miss Allens reached me this Morning— I am pleased with them, and with those who wrote them.2 it is not in my power now to write to the Children, having scarce a moment unoccupied— The Court did not adjourn untill between 8 and 9 oc[loc]k. last night—
I approve of your Proposition to give the Invitation you mention— it is better that it should come from you. Write therefore immediately enclose the Letter to me. I will send it on under Cover of one from me— It is proper that on the occasion of Susans Marriage I shd. write— Her not coming to NYork does not surprize me— his affairs doubtless oppose it both on acc[oun]t. of Time and Expence, and she probably has certain apprehensions which you will easily percieve, which may reconcile her to proceeding directly to the place of her Destination—
How little do we percieve of things to come— There is a Providence that over rules all our Plans, and I may add Resolutions—
I have much to say & to do, and am very impatient to be with You— My Love to the Children— God bless & preserve you & them— I am my Dr Sally your very affectte. Husband,
John Jay
