John Jay Papers

To John Jay from Sarah Livingston Jay, [18 April 1794]

From Sarah Livingston Jay

[Friday 18th. April— 1794]

My dr Mr Jay,

Your letter of yesterday1 gave me reason to think that one from me wd. hardly reach you before you left Philadelphia from the one I’ve this instt. received you think I may write how my dr. Mr. Jay is it possible? The Utmost exertion I can make is to be silent— excuse me if I have not philosophy or Patriotism to do more— I heard of the nomination yesterday— so did the Children— the paper of to-day mentions it as a report that deserves credit—2 before this reaches you the event will be determined— had any one predicted that dread wd. be mingled with my desire to see you could I have believed it— Never! Yet so it is. Should you leave us I must intreat you to permit your son to accompany you. It would give him infinite pleasure & me great consolation.3 Continue my dr. Mr. Jay to let me daily hear from you & if possible inform me when I may expect to see you.

Your brother Peter came to Town on Tuesday & left us on Thursday— he & Polly were well— The Children are well. I have had a most acute head-ache & my eyes are very sore— Mr. Sterrit sets out for Baltimore to-morrow— by him I shall write to Mrs. Ridley—

Genl. Schuyler this inst. left me— he goes to-morrow to Philadelphia—& will deliver this to you.4 Adieu my best beloved! Absent or present I am wholly Yours—

Sa. Jay
