37. TJ’s 1823 order of French wines included, in addition to the Ledanon, Bergasse claret, Clairette de Limoux, and Muscat de Rivesalte listed below, a request for thirty gallons of brandy. The total cost was $71.39 (TJ to Dodge & Oxnard, 3 June 1823; MB 9 and 25 Feb. 1824).

40. When local efforts to build a nonsectarian church in Charlottesville foundered in February, the leader of the subscription campaign for the Episcopalians, Rev. Frederick Hatch, enlisted TJ’s aid. TJ is said to have provided the plan for Christ Episcopal Church, which was consecrated in 1826 and demolished in 1895. He also asked that the pews be open and free, so that worshippers would be seated “pell mell” as they would lie in death. 44. TJ sent this donation to the American Philosophical Society to help defray publication costs of the catalogue of its library, a copy of which TJ had received from John Vaughan in June (TJ to Vaughan, 4 July 1824; Vaughan to TJ, 4 June 1824).

45. The Agricultural Society of Albemarle, organized in 1817, became, through its connection with John S. Skinner and his American Farmer, one of the best known in the United States. James Madison was its president, TMR was vice-president, Peter Minor secretary, and TJ, although he never attended a meeting, was active through correspondence (Lucretia R. Bishko, “The Agricultural Society of Albemarle and John S. Skinner: An Enduring Friendship,” MACH, xxxi [1973], 76-113).

46. French dancing master John A. Xaupi had first opened a dancing school in Charlottesville in 1823 (Rawlings, Early Charlottesville, p. 108; Xaupi to TJ, 31 Aug. 1825). 47.  Henry Lee (1787-1837), son of Henry (“Light Horse Harry”) Lee, had sent TJ a prospectus of a newspaper he planned to publish. Lee returned TJ’s subscription money because his paper was not yet a reality, nor, apparently, did it ever become one (Lee to TJ, 14 July, 26 Aug. 1824; TJ to Lee, 10 Aug. 1824; MB 28 Aug. 1824).

48. TJ had asked Thomas Appleton in Italy to procure for him marble slabs for the architraves of three large and five smaller fireplaces at Monticello. They cost him, including duty, about $350 (TJ to Appleton, 18 May 1824; Appleton to TJ, 8 May 1825; TJ notes on marble for fireplaces, undated, ViU; MB 15 Aug., 22 Sep., 2 Dec. 1825).

49.  Nimrod Bramham and Charles Vest were the new tenants of TJ’s Shadwell manufacturing mill.

50. On 4 Nov. the Marquis de Lafayette and his entourage arrived at Monticello for a ten-day visit. The next day he and TJ attended the first public dinner in the Rotunda of the University of Virginia. 51.  Hiram Saunders may have been the Saunders mentioned by TMR as the “last Monticello overseer” (TMR to Mary J. Randolph, 21 Oct. 1827, NcU).

52. TJ’s 1824 French wine order, which arrived after his supply of red wine had been exhausted by the lavish entertaining during Lafayette’s visit, included 150 bottles of red Bergasse, 100 bottles of Ledanon, 75 bottles of Blanquette de Limoux, 50 bottles of Muscat de Rivesalte, and, “for experiment,” a thirty-gallon cask of vin ordinaire. TJ thought that this wine, diluted with water, might make a cheaper table drink than cider or beer (TJ to Dodge & Oxnard, 6 June 1824; TJ to Bernard Peyton, 21 Nov. 1824; MB 18 Dec. 1824, 4 Jan. 1825).

53. TJ’s page number evidently referred to the cabbage purchases at MB 10 Nov. and 11 Dec. 1822 in order to note a price decrease. Madison (1805-1877) and Eston Hemings (b. 1808), sons of Sally Hemings, were apprentices of their uncle John Hemings, the Monticello cabinetmaker. In his will TJ granted them their freedom at the age of twenty-one. The brothers emigrated to Ohio in the 1830s (Brodie, Jefferson, p. 471-6 description begins Fawn M.
