About Permalinks

Whenever you find a document in Founders Online that you want to bookmark, share, or cite in your writing, always do so using its permalink, or permanent link. The permalink can always be found at the foot of the document, below the notes section. For example, here is the permalink section for a Jefferson document:

permalink example

The permalink always starts with /documents/ plus the name of the project the document comes from, followed by a numeric identifier.

If you found the same document through a search, you might see a URL for it like

http://founders.archives.gov/?q=rival+%22Suckey+Potter%22&s=1511311111&sa=&r=1&sr=

That represents the position the document had in a particular search, in this case for the word rival plus the name Suckey Potter. As content is added to Founders Online, more documents may match any given search, so the search URL that retrieved one document may retrieve a different document in the future. Only the permalink is a stable pointer to the document.
