To James Madison from Richard S. Hackley, 12 August 1806 (Abstract)

From Richard S. Hackley, 12 August 1806 (Abstract)

§ From Richard S. Hackley. 12 August 1806, New York. “Being informed that the appointment of Commercial Agent, at Saint Andero is vacant, and that the president of the united States, may probably soon nominate some person to fill the duties of that office, I beg leave to offer myself to his view, as one desirous of the appointment.

“In making Known my wishes on this Subject, I, at the same time, take the Liberty to Inclose you some Letters, handed me, by my freinds & neighbours, Intended principally to Shew the favorable Sentiments they entertain towards me.1 These have been anticipated, I am advised by some of my Southern freinds already; addressed to your department, having in view a different object of the Same nature,2 which, I presume, will by the president be deemed compatable with the present application & So far Justify the appointment, Should he think it proper to Confer it on me.”

RC (DNA: RG 59, LAR, 1801–9, filed under “Hackley”). 1 p.; docketed by Jefferson. For enclosures, see n. 1.

1Hackley probably enclosed Theodorus Bailey to JM, 12 Aug. 1806, and a note dated August 1806 at New York, addressed to Hackley and signed by John B. Coles and fifty-seven others (3 pp.), stating their belief that if appointed consul at Santander, Hackley would promote “Justice and the Interests of the United States … upon every occasion” (DNA: RG 59, LAR, 1801–9, filed under “Hackley”).

2Hackley may have had in mind John Dawson to JM, July 1806, and Richard Brent to JM, 3 Aug. 1806.
