Dear Sir
The Bearer Mr Charles Tomkies an officer in Colo. Byrds Regiment will deliver you this,1 and shall be obliged to you for any thing wherein you can be serviceable to him, not dobting your readiness to oblige me in a thing of this sort, I have taken upon me to recommend him to you as a Gentleman of worth & particular friend of mine. I heartily wish you success, & may all happiness attend you. I am Dr Sir Yr Affect. Kinsman

Warner Lewis (b. 1720), of Warner Hall, Gloucester County, was GW’s cousin and in August 1755 had a part in the appointing of GW colonel of the Virginia Regiment. See Warner Lewis to GW, 9 Aug. 1755.
1. Charles Tomkies of Gloucester County became a lieutenant in William Byrd’s 2d Virginia Regiment. He also served as a captain in the 1st Virginia Regiment, Continental line, early in the Revolutionary War.
