To George Washington from Montlezun, 25 February 1789

From Montlezun

Bordeaux, France, 25 Feb. 1789. Forwards to GW papers supporting his eligibility for membership in the Society of the Cincinnati and requests GW’s support for his request to join the society.1

Jean-François du Moulin de La Barthette, chevalier de Montlezun (b. 1729), began his career in the French army in 1745 and served with French forces in America from 1778 to 1782, including service at the siege of Yorktown. In 1789 Montlezun was still in the army.

1The enclosures included a letter from the comte de Fléchin to Montlezun, 14 Feb. 1782, an undated letter from Montlezun to the Society of the Cincinnati, a copy of his commission as lieutenant in the Touraine Regiment, 15 May 1785, and a statement certifying the nobility of Montlezun’s family, 8 Sept. 1770.
