General Orders

[New Windsor] Tuesday May 8th 1781.

Parole Countersigns——

As the badness of the weather prevented the inspection of the first brigades of Massachusett and Connecticut yesterday they will be inspected on thursday1—the second brigades of Massachusett and Connecticut on saturday—and the third Massachusett and Stark’s brigades on Monday next; the time and manner of inspection to be the same as already pointed out.

Colonel Hazen’s regiment to be held in readiness for Inspection on Tuesday 15th their returns to be the same as directed for the other regiments.2

1In his diary entry for 7 May, GW wrote about the wind that had blown “with great force” for “the last two days” and “was accompanied this day by incessant Rain” (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. Hessian lieutenant John Charles Philip von Krafft, stationed near New York City, wrote in his journal entry for 7 and 8 May: “There was such astonishing wind and rain here that I do not remember to have experienced the like as long as we have been here” (Krafft, Journal description begins Journal of Lieutenant John Charles Philip von Krafft. 1882. 2GW had set specifications for troop inspections and returns in the general orders for 2 May.
