Lebanon [Conn.] 27th April 1781

My Dear Sir

I have the Honor of your Letter of the 17th instant respecting Camp Equipage for the Use of the Troops of this State1—I am very sensible of the Importance of this Requisition & shall attend to it with particular Consideration—Our Genl Assembly will meet soon—when your Letter with One from the Q.M. Genl shall be laid before them—& hope Measures will be by them taken to make th⟨e⟩ necessary Preparations for the Fulfillment of your Excellency’s Wishes2—With every Sentiment of Respect and Esteem—I am Dear Sir Your most Obedient humble Servant

ALS, DLC:GW. Trumbull signed the cover, which he addressed to GW at New Windsor, and also wrote: “⅌ Line of Expresses.” Colonel Darrot signed another notation on the cover that was written in French and directed the letter’s bearer to pass through the legion’s outposts immediately (see Jonathan Trumbull, Jr., to GW, this date, source note). GW’s aide-de-camp David Humphreys docketed the letter: “Acknowledged 10th of May” (see GW to Trumbull, 10 May, postscript, Ct: Trumbull Papers, with Circular to the New England States, same date).

2After its session opened on 10 May, the Connecticut legislature adopted a resolution authorizing Trumbull and the Council of Safety “to contract with any person or persons to furnish for the use of the army proper materials for the making of tents, knapsacks and haversacks, to the amount of the requisition of Timothy Pickering, Esqr, Quarter Master General, by his letter to the Governor of the 17th of April, 1781, and satisfy any person or persons so furnishing said articles the value thereof as the same shall be agreed upon, by assigning or conveying upon an appr[a]isal any of the estates not disposed of confiscated to this State” (Conn.
