1. FitzRandolph enclosed an unaddressed and undated report from “W.D.” that begins by explaining espionage difficulties caused by British searches of “traders” after they “Get out of the town,” presumably New York City. These encounters put “ten of them in the provo[st].” The report continues: “Theire is a Secret Exispedition on foot and Several Hors vessels are Geting Ready all the Hors that is Hear are to Imbarck … from all that I Can Geather they will Make A Dash Some wheare to the Sutherd with all they Hors that Can Be mustered and But what part or what is theire Object it is Imposabel to tell at this time nor what Quantety of men they will take with them much is talked of the Last mail that was taken from Mr Montange But all Remains a Secret as yet all the troops hear Keep theire winter Quarters As yet And none Seem to [be] preparing for a moove But the Hors, all the vessels in the Harbour at this time are the Rainbow of forty guns and the Medea of thirty two and Savave of twenty as to arrivals the papers will Shew you the thyne packet will Sail next Sunday” (DLC:GW, filed under 14 April; the next Sunday probably was 22 April; for the captured mail, see GW to Elias Dayton, 4 April, n.2; see also Samuel Loudon to GW, 12 April). The Savage was a British sloop with fourteen guns.
2. No enemy cavalry incursion materialized. For the British embarkation, see William Heath to GW, 1 May, n.1.
