Head Quarters New Windsor Janry 9th 1781

Sir

I had the honor to receive the Packet from the Count De Rochambeau addressed to the Chevalier De la Luzerne; last Evening;1 which I forwarded early this Morning by a safe conveyance:2 And was happy in having an opportunity to assure you, With how much regard & esteem I am Sir Your Most Obedient & Very Humble Servant.

1On 3 Jan., Lauzun wrote GW from Lebanon, Conn.: “I hope that you will excuse the Liberty to dare direct the Inclosed paket for the Chevalier de La Luserne to your Excellency, the Count de Rochambeau order me to Send him by the surest way and quickly if it is possible; and I Suppose mani more occasions to be expected from the head Quarters that from Lebanon” (L, PHi: Gratz Collection).
