Sir,

Enclosed you will receive the Copy of a resolve of Congress of the 14th Instant, referring the Petition of Coll Loring, & Papers therein mentioned, which are also herewith enclosed; to your Excellency. Sam. Huntington President

LS, DLC:GW; LB, DNA:PCC, item 15.

GW’s aide-de-camp Tench Tilghman indicated on the docket of the LS that Huntington had referred Jotham Loring’s “petition” and that GW subsequently wrote Loring on 7 April 1781. Huntington enclosed a congressional order adopted on 14 Dec. 1780 to refer “the Memorial and other papers of Colo. Loring” to GW (DLC:GW; see also JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends , 18:1152). Loring’s petition, which sought reconsideration of his dismissal from the army when a lieutenant colonel for fraud and disobedience, has not been identified (see also JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends , 18:1004, and General Orders, 10 July 1779, n.1). GW drafted a letter to Loring on 6 April 1781 with a denial of his request for a new court-martial (DLC:GW; see also Loring to GW, May 1781, and GW to Loring, 24 Aug. 1781, both DLC:GW).
