A record in GW’s expense book for this date indicates a cash payment to “Wm Harriss (as ⅌ order) for Elnah Sanderson who acted as hostler to His Excellency” (household account book, 11 April 1776–21 Nov. 1780, DLC:GW, ser. 5). Maj. Caleb Gibbs prepared a receipt for $18, signed by William Harris, on this date (Revolutionary War Receipt Book, 1776–1780, DLC:GW, ser. 5). Elnathan Sanderson, who served in GW’s guard and had been discharged from the army on 28 March, received $3 of extra pay for six months.
William Harris (1754–1819) began service as a private in April 1775. He served intermittently in the army until he was discharged in February 1777. The following April, he enlisted again as a private for three years and joined the 8th Massachusetts Regiment. Harris transferred to GW’s guard in March 1778 and left the army on 1 April 1780.
