General Orders

Head-Quarters Morristown tuesday March 14th 1780.

Parole Vivacity— C. Signs Wit—Wine—

The Brigade Majors are to make accurate returns of the numbers of the company books, soldiers books & Regulations delivered each regiment in their respective brigades and the numbers of each wanting—These returns to be made by tomorrow at orderly time and delivered at the Orderly-Office.

The State Cloathiers of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania New-York and Connecticutt are to apply immediately at the Cloathier General’s Store in Morristown for their respective proportions of cloathing.

Adj. Gen. Alexander Scammell’s orderly book entry for this date includes additional general orders: “The second Maryland Brigade will send a Fatigue Party of a Corporal and six men to Baron steubens Quarters to finish a Guard Hutt. … The General Court Martial whereof Genl Hand is President will sit again tomorrow Two orderly serjeants from Genl Hands Brigade and two from Genl Maxwells Brigade will attend the Court” (orderly book, 17 Oct. 1779–22 March 1780, DNA: RG 93, Orderly Books, 1775–1783, vol. 33). This court-martial tried William Shippen, Jr., on allegations of maladministration in the medical department (see General Orders, 13 March, and n.1).

A record in GW’s expense book for this date reads: “To Bildad Edwards receipt for 60 dollars for extra wages as acting steward to His Excelly” (household account book, 11 April 1776–21 Nov. 1780, DLC:GW, ser. 5). A receipt from Edwards with this date indicates that he received $10 extra pay each month for six months for his services (Revolutionary War Receipt Book, 1776–1780, DLC:GW, ser. 5).

Bildad Edwards (b. 1752) joined the 1st Connecticut Regiment in March 1777. He became a sergeant after his transfer to GW’s guard the next year.
