1Hancock apparently enclosed a copy of this day’s edition of the Pennsylvania Ledger: Or the Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New-Jersey Weekly Advertiser (Philadelphia), which prints an extract from Gen. Charles Lee’s letter of 2 July concerning the recent American victory at Sullivan’s Island and the narrative of five escaped prisoners that Lee enclosed in his letter (see Hancock to GW, 19 July). The Pennsylvania Evening Post (Philadelphia) for this date, which as its name indicates was published in the evening, also includes those documents.
