1. George Young was the young clerk hired by GW in January (Robert Adam to GW, 9 Jan., n.2). William Skilling was the laborer who had worked regularly for GW in the late 1760s and was to be hired again in 1784. On 25 Feb. 1775 Skilling signed an agreement to take GW’s slaves and servants out to GW’s lands on the Ohio. John Knowles and his wife were two indentured servants bought by GW for £45.6.8 in December from Baker Brooke (Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , 119). Knowles was hired by GW in 1786, and on 7 July 1789 GW hired him as a bricklayer and his wife, Rachael, as a household servant (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 4:332; Agreement with John Knowles, 7 July 1789, DLC:GW). GW also referred to Knowles as a stonemason and to his wife as a spinner (Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , index, 226, 321). William Webster and John Broad were the convicts purchased by GW, Webster earlier in 1774 and Broad in 1773 (see William McGachen to GW, 13 Mar. 1774, n.1, and Benedict Calvert to GW, 25 Aug. 1773, n.1). Carpenter Jonathan Palmer and gardener David Cowan are missing from this year’s list of tithables, and GW’s old servant John Alton has been moved to Muddy Hole as overseer.

2. Among the house servants, Nell has been added to the tithable list and Lucy does not appear. Joe is probably John Parke Custis’s servant. The Home House shows the greatest change in tithables. Harry and Jone have been dropped from the list, but nine new names appear: Frank, Boson, Gunner, Bristol, Davy, Dick, Myrtilla, Phillis, and Lydia. Among the tradesmen, Frank and Ned have disappeared, Ned perhaps to the Ferry farm, and Michael, Nat, and Nace have been added. Michael may be from the Ferry farm list of 1773. Nace was the cooper hired from Philip Langfitt in 1773 (Cash Accounts, December 1773, n.14). The James and Tom added at the end of the list of tradesmen may have been an inadvertent repetition of the two mentioned earlier in this list. At the Ferry farm Michael does not appear and may have been the man who appears here as a tradesman. Ned and Lucy are added, perhaps from the 1773 tradesmen’s and house servants’ lists respectively. Jesse Brummit has been added and seems to have been at Mount Vernon only for a very brief time (Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , 109). At the mill the second Moll has been dropped, possibly moved to Dogue Run. Fatimer and Little Fatimer appear for the first time. At Dogue Run the name of Bath has been dropped; probably he was sent to the River farm. Dick and Jack are added, the former probably from River farm. Jone and Moll also appear, Jone probably taken from Home House and Moll from the Mill. At Muddy Hole the only change is John Alton who has been added as overseer. At the River farm in Fairfax Parish, James Oram’s name has been added. He seems to have been at Mount Vernon very briefly (Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , 76). Harry, Bath, Scipio, Stafford, and Suckey have also been added, Bath probably the man formerly at Dogue Run. Dick, probably now at Dogue Run, has been dropped.
