James Madison Papers

To James Madison from Daniel Parker, [ca. 29 August] 1813

From Daniel Parker

[ca. 29 August 1813]

Copy of letter from Genl. Armstrong to Governor Shelby—

The Secretary did not understand the memdm. sent with Govr. Shelby’s letter & from the enclosed it appears that he expects the President will direct relative to the Ky. Militia.1

An extract from Genl. Harrison’s authority has been sent to the President2 & the Govs. letter is now enclosed for his further information.3

RC (DNA: RG 59, ML). RC undated; written on the recto of a single folded leaf opposite a copy of John Armstrong to Isaac Shelby, 21 Aug. 1813. Conjectural date assigned on the basis of the date of that letter and the fact that mail from the northern front typically took six to ten days to reach Washington. For enclosure, see n. 3.

1Armstrong to Shelby, 21 Aug. 1813 (1 p.), acknowledged receipt of Shelby’s letter of 1 Aug. and stated that a copy of it had been sent to JM “for his consideration & orders,” of which Shelby would be informed as soon as possible.

3For Shelby’s 1 Aug. 1813 letter to Armstrong, see Parker to JM, 20 Aug. 1813 (second letter), n. 1.
