26 April 1813, Philadelphia. “Col. Hugh Ferguson, of this City, informs me, that he has applied to you for the office of Treasurer of the Mint;1 and having requested me to address you on the subject, it is due to him to say, that he sustains a fair & unblemished character and, to the best of my knowledge, is a gentleman of strict integrity.”
