RC (DLC). Unaddressed, undated. Identified as Jefferson’s cabinet meeting “Notes on Impressment” in the Index to the James Madison Papers, where it is dated 17 March 1807. Conjectural date confirmed based on Jefferson’s similar notes on his 17 March 1807 cabinet meeting to discuss the Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation between His Britannic Majesty and the United States of America (DLC: Jefferson Papers); JM had received a copy of that treaty on 15 March (see James Monroe and William Pinkney to JM, 3 Jan. 1807, and n. and n. 1). At the bottom of the note, Jefferson wrote and then canceled: “Reserve claim of indemnitys.”

1For the note, see Monroe and Pinkney to JM, 3 Jan. 1807, n. 40.
