1Joshua Wingate Jr. (1773–1843), a Massachusetts native and 1795 graduate of Harvard University, married Henry Dearborn’s daughter Julia and lived in Maine. After serving as chief clerk for Dearborn at the War Department, Wingate was named postmaster of Portland, Maine, in 1804. Two years later Thomas Jefferson appointed Wingate collector of Bath, Maine, a position he held until his resignation in 1820 (Boyd, Papers of Thomas Jefferson, 38:296–97).
