§ From Joseph Stanton. 22 December 1806, “Washington City.” “I herewith Transmit, for your Consideration The enclosed Letters Re[c]omending Mr. Wm S Shaw as a suitable person for Consul of the Island of Mediera.1 I am not personally acquainted with the Gentleman, But am with his two Recomenders the Robinsons, they are Reputable Merchants of the City of Newyork, which Induces me to Join them in Soliciting your Interest for his Appointment.”

Adds in a postscript: “the above Gentlemen are friends to Our Government & Constitution.”

RC 1 p.; docketed by Jefferson, with his note: “Shaw Wm S to be Consul Madeira 1806—before the reciept of this letter, to wit in the morning of the same day (Dec. 23.) the nomination of J. L. Cathcart had been sent to the Senate.” For surviving enclosure, see n. 1.

1Stanton enclosed William Robinson and S. Robinson to Stanton, 19 Dec. 1806 (2 pp.), which mentions “an inclosed letter from your brother.” No other letters have been found.
