1. This notation refers to a separate journal of accounts where JM’s 7 December 1806 total due of $225.62 is represented on page 162 (MdBSAr: St. Mary’s College Journal, 1805–8; 1 p.; in French).
2. Omitted for masters of pleasures. “Maîtres d’agrément” instructed pupils in dance, music, and social refinement (Dictionnaire de l’Académie françoise, 5th ed. [2 vols.; Paris, 1814], 1:33). A separate accounting entry for this omission appears five pages later in the account book under “Dt. James Madison for John Todd” (MdBSAr: St. Mary’s College Account Book, 1805–7):
