To James Madison from Molly Tilton, 1 June 1806
[letter not found]
¶ From Molly Tilton. Letter not found. 1 June 1806. Acknowledged in Daniel Brent to Tilton, 17 June 1806, addressed to Tilton at Newburyport. Brent noted that Tilton’s letter had enclosed one from her son, “John Stickney, an Impressed American Seaman, on board of a British Ship of war in England,” and had asked “that measures may be taken by this Government to procure his discharge; as his letter gives information that the application which had been made by the American Agent at London for this purpose did not succeed, your said Son having entered into the British service, & received the Bounty.” Brent stated further that JM had instructed him to inform Tilton “that authenticated Copies of the Papers in this Case, with which this office had been furnished, were forwarded some time ago to our Agent at London … and that the Case will be again recommended to his patronage” (DNA: RG 59, Correspondence with Collectors of Customs regarding Impressed Seamen, box 12).
