§ From William Haslett Smith.1 20 April 1806, Baltimore. “I have to ask the favor of you to present the enclosed Dft, for acceptance, John Smith Contr. on H Dearborn for 500 $. As accidents have so long prevented the presentment of this Dft., possibly it may be paid at Sight, if not be pleased to have it accepted and I can have it discounted at our Banks.
“Mrs. Smith, presents her respects to yourself and Mrs. Madison.”

1. William Haslett Smith (1777–1829) was a Baltimore importer and wine merchant who became a “very extensive planter in central Virginia.” He was married to JM’s niece Mary Conway Bell Madison (Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Mississippi, Embracing … a Record of the Lives of Many of the Most Worthy and Illustrious Families and Individuals [2 vols.; Chicago, 1891], 2:791; glossary, ).
