Accompanied by Jefferson, JM left New York around 1 Sept. After a stopover at Philadelphia, the two travelers proceeded southward by way of Chestertown (on Maryland’s eastern shore), Annapolis, Bladensburg, Georgetown, Alexandria (visiting the president at Mount Vernon), and Fredericksburg, arriving at Orange Court House around noon on 18 Sept.
