From James Madison to Michael Gratz, 3 January 1781

To Michael Gratz

MS (Historical Society of Pennsylvania).

Jany 3d. 1781

Recd. of Mr. Michael Gratz four thousand eight hundred and thirty seven continental dollars, being part of ten thousand dollars due on a draught in his favor by the Virginia delegates on the Auditors of that State, four thousand dollars having been received before.1 the remaining ballance eleven hundred sixty three.2

J. Madison Junr.

2This reference to a balance still due does not square with JM’s entry for 3 January in his statement of 27 March 1781 to the Virginia auditors (Virginia State Library). In the latter, it appears that on 3 January he received from Gratz $6,000 rather than $4,837. Probably he consolidated two transactions in the account sent to the auditors, although in fact he had drawn the balance of $1,163 sometime between 3 January and 27 March 1781.
