J Griscom solicits the patronage of President Jefferson, to his projected Magazine, & will be very1 thankful for any Suggestions relative to its management.—

RC (DLC); dateline at foot of text; addressed: “Thomas Jefferson Virginia”; franked; postmarked; endorsed by TJ as received 28 Mar. 1824 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure: Prospectus for Mechanic’s and Manufacturer’s Magazine. A Monthly Journal, devoted to the Arts and Trades of the United States, to be edited by Griscom, stating that the journal will encourage in the artisan and mechanic class “a taste for scientific inquiry, and habits of observation,” not through “learned essays on abstract principles of science” but with “precepts and details adapted to the capacity of common readers”; that it will include not only American discoveries but also those from Europe; that it will contain “accounts of all new discoveries and inventions, economical processes, practical applications of the physical sciences, abridgement of labour, domestic receipts, &c,” as well as “Biographical Sketches of eminent mechanics and engineers”; that it will report on literary and benevolent institutions, supply notices of “useful school books, treatises on particular branches of learning, and on the moral government of children,” and give details on the establishment and progress of “other beneficent institutions, such as Hospitals, Houses of Industry, Penitentiaries, &c.”; and that a volume of about four hundred pages will be produced “every six months,” and cost $5 a year (broadside in MWA).

The Mechanic’s and Manufacturer’s Magazine never seems to have begun publication.
