Wolcott Huntington (1796–1861), merchant and insurance agent, was born in Norwich, Connecticut. By 1823 he was an agent for John Trumbull. Huntington opened a dry-goods store in Norwich two years later, was elected sheriff in 1828, and supported Henry Clay’s presidential campaign in 1832. He moved to New York City by 1836 and left that place around 1840. President John Tyler appointed Huntington federal customs collector at the port of New London, Connecticut, in 1842 but removed him the following year. He was working as an insurance agent in Norwich in 1860, at which time his personal property and real estate were worth $5,500 combined (Elijah B.
