Robert S. Garnett to Thomas Jefferson, 5 February 1824
From Robert S. Garnett
Washington City Feb 5. 1824
Col Taylor having put at Mr Garnett’s disposal several copies of his “New Views of the Constitution,” Mr G. takes the liberty of sending two of them to Mr Jefferson, one of which he begs him to accept for himself, and to present the other to the library of the University of Virginia.
It will no doubt be gratifying to Mr Jefferson, to learn, that from intelligence received to day, Col: Taylor’s health is so much improved as to afford the prospect of his resuming his seat in the Senate, in a few days.
RC (MHi); dateline at foot of text; endorsed by TJ as received 10 Feb. 1824 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure: two copies of John Taylor, New Views of The Constitution of the United States (Washington, 1823; Poor, Jefferson’s Library, 11 [no. 669]).
Although a newspaper article the previous month stated that “a report prevailed in Richmond” that he had died due to a “severe indisposition,” taylor’s health subsequently improved enough that he returned to his seat in the United States Senate on 9 Feb. 1824 (Washington Daily National Intelligencer, 13 Jan., 10 Feb. 1824).
