Charlottse Friday 2nd Jany 1824—
Dear Sir
You will regret to learn that Mrs Southall is no more. She died last Evening between 9 & 10 OClock.—
The family are much distress’d, but otherwise as well as could be expected.—
You will recollect that Mrs Southalls child who died about a year ago was buried at ye Monticello Burying Ground, & the object of this communication is to ascertain in behalf of this afflicted family, if it would be agreeable to you, that the remains of Mrs Southall be confided to the same spot of earth where her child lies entomb’d.—
It is not propos’d that the funeral shall take place before tomorrow: but with your permission the necessary arrangements will be made today, for the interment.—

Mary Anne Garrett southall was the first wife of Valentine W. Southall.
In a letter to Nicholas P. Trist dated Monticello, 9 Jan. 1824, Virginia J. Randolph (Trist) wrote that on “One of the sweetest days that I ever felt, we walked down to the grave yard <here>, to see poor Mrs. Southall’s remains laid by the side of her little boy who was bury’d here exactly a year ago.” She died “in consequence of violent cold” (RC in NcU: NPT). No gravestone survives at Monticello for either mother or child.
