Thomas Jefferson Papers

James Brown (1780–1859) to Thomas Jefferson, 15 October 1823

From James Brown (1780–1859)

[Ed. Note: A letter from James Brown (1780–1859) of 15 Oct. 1823 is recorded in SJL as received four days later from Richmond, with TJ’s additional bracketed notation: “board pub. works.” Only the address cover of this document has been found (RC in DLC; with Dft of TJ to Arthur S. Brockenbrough, 9 Mar. 1825 [first letter], on verso; addressed: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr Charlottesville Monticello”; franked; postmarked Richmond, 15 Oct.; with notation in Brown’s hand adjacent to address: “With the 7th Annual report of the Board of Pub. Works”). The letter presumably covered or accompanied a copy of the Seventh Annual Report of the President and Directors of the Board of Public Works, to the General Assembly of Virginia (Richmond, 1822; possibly Poor, Jefferson’s Library, 6 [no. 223]; printed as an appendix to JHD [1822–23 sess.]).]
