Thomas Jefferson to Frederick W. Hatch, 26 September 1823

To Frederick W. Hatch

Sep. 26. 23.

Th: Jefferson asks the favor of mr Hatch to dine at Monticello tomorrow (Saturday)

RC (Robert O. Read, Pittsburgh, 1993); written on a half sheet; dateline at foot of text; addressed on verso (according to owner): “rev Mr. Hatch.” Not recorded in SJL.

The TJ Editorial Files contain information from a broadside, not found, advertising an auction to be conducted by Anthony J. Bleecker in New York City on 26 Apr. 1856. The sale reportedly included a letter from TJ to Hatch of 10 Oct. 1823 enclosing tuition fees and apologizing for his tardiness in rendering payment. Although this letter has not been found and is not recorded in SJL, under that date in his financial records TJ did record paying Hatch $75 for a “half year’s tuition of James, Ben & [Meriwether] Lewis” Randolph (MB, 2:1399).
