Sir,

I Sent you, on the 20th instt, 1 Nautical almanac for 1823 & One for 1824. I forward, By this day’s Mail, Two Bailey’s Phædrus, 8vo, London Edit., 2d hand, they are the only Copies I could obtain in all the city. the Book not being used in Our Schools, has not been reprinted here, this accounts for its Scarcity & the price—

RC (DLC); dateline beneath signature; adjacent to dateline: “Ths Jefferson Esq.”; endorsed by TJ as received 3 July 1823 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure not found.

A missing letter from TJ to Laval of 15 July 1823 is recorded in SJL with the bracketed notation “10.D.” On that day TJ also recorded that he “Inclosed to John Laval Phila. 10.D. for books” (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1397).
