Thomas Jefferson to David Gelston, 1 October 1820
To David Gelston
Monticello Oct. 1. 20.
Dear Sir
On my return home after some absence I found here your favors of Sep. 2 & 15.1 stating the amount of freight & duties on my books at 7.75 D Having no medium of remittance but in the bills of our banks I inclose 8.D. presuming they are negociable with you, and that the fractional surplus may cover their discount at market. I salute you with continued friendship & respect.
Th: Jefferson
RC (William Doyle Galleries, Inc., New York City, sale 16BP02, 22 Nov. 2016, lot 129); at foot of text: “David Gelston esq.” PoC (MHi); on verso of reused address cover of otherwise unlocated letter from Mathew Carey to TJ, [30] Mar. 1820 (see note to TJ to Carey, 13 Mar. 1820); endorsed by TJ.
