Granville S. Crockett (b. 1799), farmer and public official, was probably born in Kentucky but eventually moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee. There he commanded a military unit, the Murfreesboro Volunteers, in the 1820s. Crockett served as sheriff of Rutherford County, 1834–36, a delegate to the Tennessee House of Representatives, 1835–37, clerk of that body in 1839, and clerk of the county chancery court, 1841–42. He owned six slaves in 1830 and nine in 1840. In 1845 Crockett unsuccessfully sought an appointment from President James K.
