John B. Colvin to Thomas Jefferson, 1 August 1812
From John B. Colvin
Washington City, Aug. 1. 1812.
Sir,
I take the liberty of presenting you with a corrected copy of “A Review” of the Address of the Minority of the H. of R. of the U.S. against the prevailing War.
You will find, by it, that I am still laboring in the cause of my country—a cause in which you have rendered your name immortal.
J. B. Colvin
RC (DLC); at foot of text: “His Ex: Thomas Jefferson”; endorsed by TJ as received 6 Aug. 1812 and so recorded in SJL; with unrelated calculation by TJ on verso. Enclosure: “A Republican” (Colvin), “Review. Of an Address of George Sullivan, Martin Chittenden, [and thirty-three others], Members of the House of Representatives of the Congress of the United States, to their constituents, on the subject of the war with Great Britain” (Washington National Intelligencer, 18, 23 July, 1 Aug. 1812; reprinted in Richmond Enquirer, 28, 31 July, 7, 14, 18, 21, 25, 28 Aug. 1812, and as Review of an Address of the Minority in Congress to their Constituents, on the subject of the War with Great-Britain [Trenton, 1812]), criticizing objections to the declaration of war and to Republican policies in general in An Address of Members of the House of Representatives of the Congress of the United States to their Constituents, on the subject of the War with Great Britain (Alexandria, 1812; and many other editions); alleging that Federalists had sabotaged the nonimportation laws and argued instead for “peace with submission and disgrace”; charging the Essex Junto with sedition and treason; discounting Federalist interpretations of the John Henry incident; maintaining that they are apologists for Great Britain; disputing at length their assessments of the impressment of American seamen, the legality of British blockades, the British Orders in Council, and American policy toward France; and concluding that the Republican cause is that of justice, honesty, and uprightness.
