From Theodorus Bailey
New York, 18th March 1811.
By the Mail of saturday, I was honored with your communication, covering a letter to Mr Warden, who goes out as our Consul to Paris. That Gentleman left this City about the 11th inst, for New Port, R. I. with a view to take passage in the Vessel which is to carry Mr Irvin on his Mission=By Yesterday’s Mail I inclosed the letter in question to the Post Master at New-Port, and requested him to have it delivered if Mr W. shall not have sailed—and if he has sailed to return it under cover to me—The Post Master’s Answer may be expected on Friday or saturday in the current Week—and when received will be communicated to you without delay.—

Theodorus Bailey (1758–1828) studied law and was admitted to the New York bar in 1778. He served in the state militia during the Revolutionary War and again from 1786 to 1805, attaining the rank of brigadier general. Bailey represented Dutchess County in the United States House of Representatives as a Republican, 1793–97, 1799–1801, and (filling a vacancy) 1801–03. He served in the United States Senate from 1803 to 1804 before resigning to become postmaster of New York City. Bailey operated the post office from his home on Garden Street until his death (Genealogy of the Hoffman Family: Descendants of Martin Hoffman , 26, 207; Biog. Dir.
