Dear Sir
In order to complete the estimates for 1805, it is necessary to know the number and rank of commanding officers in the District of Louisiana. I will thank you to enclose me such list; the calculation of the emoluments I can make out myself. The appropriation necessary for Louisiana will be stated as followeth

On 19 Nov., Speaker Nathaniel Macon presented to the House of Representatives Gallatin’s estimates for 1805, which were then referred to the Committee of Ways and Means. Although Gallatin did not include a list of officers in the final report, he calculated their combined salary at $5,971.77 ( , 14:691; Letter from the Secretary of the Treasury, Transmitting a Report and Estimates of the Appropriations Which Appear to Be Necessary for the Service of the Year 1805 [Washington, D.C., 1804], 36-8, 62).
