John Jay Papers

From John Jay to Peter Augustus Jay, 12 March 1816

To Peter Augustus Jay

Bedford—12 March 1816

Dear Peter

My last Letter to you was dated the 5 Inst— William recd. one from you last Saturday, and I had one from Maria of the 5th. Inst.— I wrote to Maria last Week on the Subject on which she had requested my advice. I hope she has recd. it— One or other of us write weekly to you or Maria—1

Tell ^her^ that Mr. Silkman having already taken a Boy, has no occasion for another— at present I do not know of a good Place for Harry in this neighbourhood— Inquiry shall nevertheless be made.—

Your narrative of the fœderal Brown, is a pleasant one— there are many political as well as other Incidents which are ill calculated for publicity.—

Have you as yet seen Mr. Morris S. Miller, or had an opportunity of forwarding the money and Papers to him? recollect the Interest due from Mr. William W. Morris—

For my own part I am satisfied with the manner in which the Allen affair has been managed— wisdom and violence seldom accord.—

I do not expect to see you “with the first Swallow”2 but I do expect to see you when the Season calls Farmers to their Business— I hope you will bring with you a Quietus for our Court House—

My Health has little Fluctuations— Nancy’s Eyes are again better, but ^not^ quite so well as before their late Fatigue— she wrote too much— Augusta continues indisposed— William and the Children are well—

Has John got rid of his Cough— if not, try our Remedy—a Plaister between his Shoulders— My Love to Maria and to him— My Compts. to Caty, and to Mr. Isaacs— I am Dear Peter Your very affte. Father
