From John Jay to Sarah Livingston Jay, 23 November 1783
To Sarah Livingston Jay
London 23 Novr. 1783
Harley Street No. 30—
My dear Sally
I wrote to you by the last Post, and also by Mr Barry, who set out for Paris Yesterday— Those Letters express my concern at your Silence, & therefore will perhaps excite some unpleasant Emotions— Mr Laurens gave me your kind & agreable Letter of the 6th. Inst. Yesterday— I sincerely thank You for it— Mr Laurens was detained above a Week at Calais, waiting for proper weather &c:— Similar obstacles have probably deprived me of the Pleasure of receiving other Letters from you— I cannot omit mentioning this Circumstance, & informing You that I will forbear all further Conjectures on the Subject until I hear from You—
It gives me great Satisfaction to hear that you are so well pleased with your House &c: I am anxious to participate with you in ^the^ Comforts you mention— Sun Shine is a Rarity here—and “the Light of wax Candles” is a poor Substitute for it— Is it not strange that Maria should not speake yet— Mrs. Bingham’s Little girl of the same age prattles not a little—
I am much displeased with Abbys Conduct— I think with the Doctr. that it would be best to suspend all attention to her for some Time— I hope she is separated from Wine and improper Company, and that, without being indulged in the Conveniencies, she has all the Necessaries of Life—if so Sobriety & Solitude & want of Employment will render her Temper more obedient to Reason. I am glad the other Servants behave well— I shall not forget your orders, & will readily execute any others you may favor me with.
My Throat continues a little inflamed—the next Letter you will recieve from me, will be dated at Bath, where my Stay shall not be a Moment longer than the object of my going there may require— I am really home Sick, & find few Things more unpleasant than absence from my Family—a Smile from you & the Caresses of our little ones are worth more ^to me^ Than all the Pleasures of this Town—
Mr & Mrs. Bingham to whose very friendly attention I am much indebted, present their Compts. to You—remember me to Peter, and our Friends at Passy & Auteuil I am my dear Sally Your very afft.
John Jay
