1. Caleb Whitefoord (1734–1810), secretary to Oswald, a wit, litterateur, connoisseur of the arts, and former London neighbor of Franklin. He attested to the signing of the Preliminary Articles.
2. Vaughan, a pro-American friend of BF and protégé of Shelburne’s, was acting as Shelburne’s private agent and had no official diplomatic status. Shelburne dispatched him to Paris to reassure BF of his willingness to accept American independence. See , 291–93.
