John Jay Papers

From John Jay to Bernardo del Campo, 1 February 1782

To Bernardo del Campo

[Madrid 1 Feby 1782]

Mr Jay presents his Compliments to Mr Del Campo, and requests to be informed whether he has as yet recd. the Instructions necessary to enable him to execute his appointment relative to the Affairs of the United States, at this Court. Mr. Jay begs Leave again to mention his being ready & anxious to enter with Mr. Del Campo, into the Discussion of those affairs, at any Time & place that may be agreable to him.1

Mr Jay also requests the Favor of Mr Del Campo, to obtain his Excellency the Count De Florida Blancas Passports, for Lt. Colonel Henry B. Livingston & Mr Stephen Codman to go from hence to Cadiz, from whence they purpose to embark for North America.

As Colonel Livingston has been ^more than^ two Years in Mr Jay’s Family, he presumes it would be unnecesary to give Mr. Del Campo any particular Information respecting him. Mr. Codman is of the House of Codman and Smith, who are respectable merchants in Boston, and are owners of the Ship which lately arrived at Cadiz, laden with Cacao from the Carraccas— This Gentleman arrived here a few Days ago from Bilbao, and is going to Cadiz on the Business of that Ship and Cargo—
