1. Jackson, a major in the Second Regiment of Artillerists and Engineers, was in command of the troops stationed at Newport.
This letter was incorrectly addressed to H as inspector general of the Army, a position he no longer held. See H to Ebenezer Stevens, July 1, 1800, note 3.
