From Alexander Hamilton to George Washington, 19 October 1792
To George Washington
[Philadelphia] October 19, 1792. “The Secretary of the Treasury … has the honor to observe that the absence of the Auditor1 renders it requisite for the President to designate the person who shall execute the duty of Auditor in his absence.… The first Clerk2 naturally presents himself to consideration; and will, it is believed, be adequate to all necessary business.”
